12 - Learn How To Knit With @sweetpea: The Knot Stitch

Phew, it’s getting colder here in my part of the world! As winter starts to set in my passion for knitting is growing and to date I have created piles of beanies, gloves, jerseys, baby booties and more! I have also been challenging myself to learn new stitches and more intricate patterns. One of the recent stitches which I finally got to action is the Knot Stitch; a sweet little knotted stitch that adds a bit of flair to plain stocking stitched work.

The images below show you what a Knotted Stitch looks like when worked into plain stocking stitched rows. You can place your knotted stitches at intervals of your choosing to create a pretty pattern and “jush” (spruce) up garments that would otherwise look a little more on the plain side.

The steps to make a knotted stitch are very simple and I will walk you through them below. I have also put together a little video tutorial which demonstrates the actions.

LEARN HOW TO MAKE A KNOT STITCH WHEN KNITTING

THE STEPS

  1. Cast on stitches in multiples of six, plus five extras. For example, in my demonstration I casted on 17 stitches (12 + 5). Your number of stitches will depend on what it is you are knitting, or how big you want your work to be.
  2. Knit your first row.
  3. Purl your second row.
  4. Knit the first stitch in your third row.
  5. Start your first knot by inserting your right needle into the next three stitches as if you were going to purl them. Before you slip the purled stiches off of your needle, take your working wool to the back and knit into the three stitches. Once again, don’t slip the stitches off just yet because you need to purl back into them once more before you have completed the step. So, you are going to purl three stitches together, then you are going to knit them, and then purl them again before slipping them off. This is the step that forms your knot.
  6. Now you can knit three, make your not, knit three and repeat until the end of your work
  7. Purl a row.
  8. Knit a Row.
  9. Purl a row.
  10. Begin your knotted row as in step 5 once again.
  11. * Repeat pattern from step two.

NOTE: You do not have to follow this pattern to create knotted knit work. You can place your knots as your own pattern requires you to do so. The above pattern is just an example.

Knitting is a wonderful way to not only relax, meditate and practice your creativity, it is also an excellent way to source an income for yourself. You can sell your knitted pieces and garments and have your own business! This is why I encourage communities to learn how to knit, it opens up a world of opportunities!
