Oh my gosh, there is almost nothing as cute as these itty-bitty baby booties! A friend of mine recently gave birth to a tiny little girl and since it is winter time here in the Southern Hemisphere, I decided to knit a few things for this tiny princess. For a long time now, knitted garments have been out of fashion, especially for new-borns. But woolly clothes seem to be making an entrance as a trend once again, and of course, I am taking full advantage of this!
These booties are quick and easy to make. You will only need basic knitting skills to perfect the pair and the utensils required are nothing out of the ordinary either. To make itty bitty baby booties you will need:
- A pair of size 5 mm straight needles
- Double knit yarn
- A third needle, one size smaller
- Scissors
- A large-eye sewing needle
This pattern is perfect for beginners and the only challenge you might face is the 3-needle-bind-off that is required at the end of each bootie, to neatly secure the bottom of the sock. But before you begin to panic and feel intimidated with the steps required, please visit my recent post by Learning To Knit With @sweetpea which simply demonstrates how to do a 3-needle-bind-off.
If you are unsure of some of the other steps or stitches that are required, you can re-visit some of my previous tutorials which I will list at the bottom of the post.
The pattern I followed to make these bootie type socks is courtesy of Craftsy.com and it can safely be downloaded HERE, for free!
As per the pattern, you will need to cast on 22 stitches as per the patter. You will need to knit one (k1) and Purl one (P1) until you have about 6 cm of ribbing, for the “cuff” of the sock. You will then work in garter stitch, making new stitches in the middle of your work (m1) to shape the toe of your sock. You will then cast of using the Three-Needle-Bind-off method.
* You’ll follow this pattern twice, so that you have two booties (obviously)!
I hope you have fun with this project, like I did! If you have any questions or need some help, please feel free to contact me on Discord or comment below and I will assist where I can. HAPPY KNITTING!
