With the cold weather starting to settle in here in South Africa, I had a sudden urge to fish out my wool and needles and start knitting! This also brought on an idea to share this skill with you folks here on Steemit, perhaps you are looking for a project to keep you busy and this might be right up your alley!

I’ll start with the basics and list the steps and different stitches in an index included in each post, so that you can search for steps and demonstrations as you need, or as you progress with your new skill. In this addition to the series of Learning To Knit With @sweetpea, we’re going to look at how to do a Yarn Forward/Yarn Over stitch, which will be abbreviated as YF or YO in your patterns.
A yarn over makes an extra stitch on your needle and creates a deliberate little hole in your knit work. Yarn overs are an indispensable part of lace knitting. They have a multitude of other applications, as well, such as decorative increases, buttonholes, and novelty stitch patterns.
To help explain the steps, I have put together the following video tutorial for you:
If you didn’t quite understand the visual demonstration, perhaps the following steps will give you added guidance:
- Pull your working wool to the front of the needle (so it will lie to the front, in between your two needles). Sometimes your working wool will already fall to the front (if you’ve been purling); sometimes you have to put it there deliberately (if you’ve been knitting).
- Wrap the yarn around the needle from front to back and work the next stitch as normal. You might get a pattern that instructs you to wrap the yarn twice, or more times, around the needle to make a bigger hole.
- When you knit the row following the yarn over row, a big hole suddenly appears on your needle where a stitch should be.
- You have 1 extra stitch for every yarn over you do.
Thank you once again for taking the time to Learn To Knit With @sweetpea! There will be plenty more tutorials and patterns to follow, so please stay tuned and pop in often for more updates! Happy knitting!
