Flying Cat - Hot Air Balloon Series for Flightgear

thumbnail.jpg

My first try with the gas flight-model in FlightGear led me to my own models, after finding out that the existing models are not accurate enough for a pleasant flight. As I am not a pilot I had no clue what I will have to learn in the next weeks to come. First things first and so I found the manual for hot air ballooning on this internet page: http://www.cameronballoons.co.uk/support . It is there in different languages and for all situations of flight.

Now, that the project is finished, I can say that the balloon series is the most accurate model in FlightGear with a lots of features you want to have on a hot air balloon to make different flight competitions and have lot of fun!

The flight-dynamics model for gas balloonets, had to be used for this project, and some tricky hours later the first test flight was a made.

Accordingly to the manual you have all important things on board to make a hot air ballooning as realistic as possible in a simulator! Some details:

  • Open basket with 6 gas bottles inside and room for 5 persons
  • Full animation of hot air filling, changing of shape depending on pressure of altitude, rip-valve for after landing
  • Holding lines and landing anchor with sand bags
  • Panel with lots of stuff
clock, vertical speed indicator, burner control switches, Altitude indicators, groundspeed, outside temperature, emergency vertical speed indicator, blower control, parachute valve, left and right turn valves, flight compass with basket direction, decision height indicator, signal pistol, volume indicators for balloonet, light switch, anchor out, rip-valve, start-up control panel, safety controllers for valves, control lamps and meter for balloonet temperature.
