About Scottish roadtrip jokes and feeling grateful on a pebble beach at Loch Ness

Roadtrip jokes

After the first stop along Loch Ness, we kept following the whole road around the gorgeous and shimmering lake. Since this was our first day of driving through Scotland my boyfriend took some time to get used to driving on the left side of the road. This almost 'stubborn' habit of English people to do things just that bit differently than the rest of the world became a topic of conversation with a lot of Scottish people we met in Bed and Breakfasts and during our travels. As Scottish people like a good laugh we learned some typical ‘Scottish’ roadtrip jokes as a bonus:

Joke 1:

  • Me, used to driving on the right side of the road: "We drive on the right side of the road!"
  • Scottish person, used to driving left on the road: “Yes, you drive on the right SIDE of the road, but we drive on the RIGHT side!”

Joke 2:

  • Me: It’s so weird you drive on the left side of the road!
  • Scottish person: "In England people drive on the left of the road, in Scotland people drive on what’s left of the road!"

Feeling grateful

Our last stop before returning to our B&B in Inverness consisted of a visit to a pebble beach. The sun was setting, the clouds reflected beautifully on the water. Almost no people around, and I was feeling especially grateful I was able to visit this place. For people who read my earlier posts: this roadtrip in Scotland last september was our first attempt at travelling again after my accident. So I almost cried from luck I made it here. And even though we didn't drive on the right SIDE of the road, we made it back to Inverness safely, with a new and fond memory created.

This day would be the start of an amazing trip through the Scottish Highlands.
