I had wanted to visit Randers Tropical Zoo for some years, and finally decided that now would be the time to do it. So I met up with @cashisking and his girlfriend in his home town Randers and spent the day watching exotic animals from all around the world.
Some facts about Randers Tropical Zoo
The zoo opened in 1996 and has gradually been expanding through it’s 21 year lifespan.
It now consists of three domes that covers 3.200 square meters. The three domes have about 275 different animal species and more than 450 different plants from Africa, Asia and South America.
There is also an outdoor exhibition covering about 700 square meters which has farm animals of various sorts and a couple of panthers as well.
The zoo also has a large section with aquariums displaying various fish from the Caribbean.
Randers is a city in the mid/northen part of denmark.
The three domes of Randers Tropical Zoo are actually way bigger than they appear in this photo. You could litteraly spend an entire day going through them.
The experience
After paying for our entries (about 30 US Dollars), we decided to check out the outdoor exhibition first. You could go up to most of the farm animals and pet them, which was a huge hit among the children. However it wasn’t all of the animals you cold pet :D
The jaguars were my absolute favorites and we were lucky to arrive just before they fed them.

When the feeding started hundreds of people gathered around and there was a speaker telling us about the jaguars and why they feed them the way they do. Some people thought it was a cruel way of feeding them, but it turns out it's actually a way of keeping them healthy. These big cats don't get a lot of exercise, so they need to have a workout once in a while. The best way to do that is by having them work for their food.
It just sank it’s teeth into the cadaver and hung like that for about 5 minutes waiting for the goat to tear apart
After finishing up outside we decided to check out the domes with animals from Africa, Asia and South America.
The first thing that hit us when we entered the dome was the immense heat and humidity. It was like stepping into a real tropical forest, and we were sweating like pigs within a few minutes. There were waterfalls and river streams all over the place and most of the animals roamed freely.
Going through the domes, you start at ground level and follow little paths through the jungle taking you both underground and way above the treetops, giving you the feeling that you are on a real adventure.

Everytime you turned a corner there were beautiful statues and murals. It gave the place an authentic atmosphere and you almost felt like Indiana Jones cutting his way through a dense jungle looking for a rare artifact inside some ancient temple.
We finished off in the aquarium section. Sadly it was very hard to take decent pictures there because of the glare in the thick aquarium glass. Luckily I managed to get a few ones that were OK.
