Eating Out - Consistency or How I learned to Stop Worrying and Post on a Daily Basis - Part 11

It's Wednesday and me, my twin sister, her boyfriend and their two kids will be going out for dinner in a couple of hours. We got something to celebrate.

I was seriously considering not to post today - felt like giving myself a day off - but when I told that to my sister, she said:

"Why don't you just write a short post. You could for instance, recommend a single movie."

At first, her suggestions didn't really appeal to me. But, while doing the dishes, my creative brain started working again and I decided to follow up on her advise, kind of:

Combine going out for dinner with a movie recommendation and this is what my movie mind came up with:

My Dinner With Andre

The above movie by Louis Malle, is definitely worth watching. I found out it's from 1981. The year that I was born. If a movie I like is as old as me, I always find that extra special. Some movies from my birth year that I like a lot are:

The Evil Dead
Mad Max 2
Escape from New York
Possession
An American Werewolf in London

I might talk about the above list another time. Not today. Today I'm going to focus on

My Dinner with Andre

This particular film was directed by Louis Malle, who - I realize this now - might actually be my favorite French director. Back in 1958, when he was only 25 years young, he directed the incredible Ascenseur pour l'échafaud (Elevator to the Gallows).

Now that is what I call an interesting trailer. Check it out and you'll see for yourself.

Before I forget, the film has an amazing soundtrack. If you're into music, you have to admire the score by Miles Davis, who appeared to be in town and put the music for this film together in one single night of jamming. Pretty amazing don't you think?

Louis Malle made some more films that are definitely worth a watch. One of my other favorites is Au Revoir Les Infants (Goodbye Children, 1987) that was based on Malle's WWII experiences as a kid.

I feel like I'm drifting off again. But then again, that is kind of my style. I'm going with the flow.

Let me end today's somewhat shorter post with the following remark on My Dinner With Andre:

Is doesn't matter if you're a modern movie watcher or not. You might have seen or heard of the movie Locke (2014). In that case, there's a chance you're gonna like My Dinner with Andre. Why? The movie is carried by its story, its dialogue. It doesn't try to entertain you with all kind of tricks. It's merely a realtime dinner conversation between friends. The acting is great. And when you're into classic cinema or French movies, there's no doubt you will like this film.

Here's the trailer:

And if you don't mind this low an image quality, you can watch the complete movie on YouTube:

Thanks for taking the time to read part 11 of my consistency series.

This is where I connect personal, daily life experiences with film talk. I'm trying to do all this in a brainstorm kind of way, in an attempt to become more consistent in my writing.

When you are interested in checking out earlier write ups of this series, here's links to part 1,2,3,4,5, 6, 7,8, 9 and 10, where I talk about Stanley Kubrick, in particular the classic The Shining, movies on food and some intense food scenes in films, the power of editing, wintery movies, a neverending story about a favorite movie from my childhood, fifties movies and cinema that takes your breath away.
