Indra Devi: First Ambassador of Yoga to the west

Indra Devi (born Eugenie V. Peterson) is widely regarded as the first ambassador of Indian Yoga to the Western World and China. She was a Russian married to Czech diplomat Jan Strakaty, who was posted to India during the mid 30's.

She was inspired by Jawaharlal Nehru (first prime minister of India) about the power of Yoga. She got lessons on Yoga from Yoga gurus Kublayananda in Bombay and famous Krishnamacharya in Mysore.

She gave Yoga lessons to famous Hollywood divas Elizabeth Arden and Marlyn Monroe. She was believed to give Yoga lesson to Madam Chiangmai Kai Shekhar in China.

She wrote several books on Yoga and relentlessly promoted Yoga to the Americas.

On this day of 3rd International day on Yoga, we should remember this great Lady.
