A study has shown that the sound produced by drones is perceived by elephants in the same way as that of bees they fear. A discovery that could help resolve conflicts between pachyderms and farmers in many African countries.
What scares elephants the most? Mice? No, this is a myth. Against all odds, these are ... insects ! It's been several years since Oxford University showed that elephants are afraid of bees . A discovery used in certain areas where these animals rub shoulders with men and cause damage to crops and homes. In Kenya, for example, fences interspersed with hives have been installed around some farms. However, it turns out that there is a parade potentially equally effective.
Researchers at Duke University (USA) found that pachyderms were frightened by the noise of drones . The sound of these machines causes a flight or defense reaction in which elephants throw earth with their probes. According to experts, it is not the sight of drones that causes panic but their noise.
All drones are not scary
This is not necessarily good news as these devices are very used to observe elephants but also to fight poaching . On the other hand, the possibility of using drones to prevent elephants from destroying crops or threatening homes is interesting. Researchers from Duke University went a little further in their trials and compared the sound produced by different models of drones to that of bees.
Result: Significant similarities exist especially in high audio frequencies . Thanks to these data, it is possible to modify the drones so as to intensify or on the contrary to reduce these high frequencies which are similar to the sound of the bees. Thus, it should be possible to use drones as well to protect elephants as to prevent them from harming humans.
